FAQ's

How do I prevent barnacles from growing on my underwater light?

We recommend using HID (high intensity discharge) Lamps = 175Watt-250Watt bulbs. The beauty of HID lamp is that when the bulb is allowed to contact the water, it generates enough heat every night to keep barnacles and other creatures from attaching to the glass. With a covered bulb system there is an insulating barrier of air that keeps the cover too cool to inhibit growth.

What is the best color to attract fish?

Most agree that green is the most effective color, but blue and even white lights can yield good results as well. However, most properties here in South Florida are on brackish water so green is what is best for our waters and fish.

Does fish lighting attract bugs?

No. The purpose of lighting and illuminating the water around, and since the light is underwater and is green, it also doesn’t attract bugs.

How does the fish light attract fish?

Small zooplankton and bacteria will be drawn to the light from the darkness. Shortly after, small fish like shiners, shad, and small panfish will arrive to feed on the zooplankton. As time passes, bigger fish will start coming in attracted to both the prospects of food and from the novelty of the light in the darkness.

Why not use LED for fish lights?

Despite the fact that LED’s or Light Emitting Diode systems are the newest technology available, they are not a good choice for a permanently installed underwater dock light system.

LED’s are more efficient and run cooler than other light sources with similar lumen ratings which is ideal for other applications, but they cannot “clean” themselves because insufficient heat is produced to clean the exterior of the light. If you’ve ever left anything hanging down in the water off the end of your dock for over a week and then pulled it up you can get an idea of what will accumulate on the exterior of an LED system.

In saltwater especially, this is a concern because the prolonged exposure to the saltwater will eventually result in barnacle growth on the exterior of the light which will render it useless. LED systems are an excellent alternative for temporary lighting off your boat, or even dock as long as you are willing to pull them in every week or so and clean off the exterior.
